This was one of my favorite scenes in the episode as well. Because just like we see how deadly and terrifying Sam is in Free to be You and Me when he throws the darts with frightening accuracy, right here we get a glimpse of the angel that Cas still has in him. He’s human now, realizing that pain is on a whole other spectrum as opposed to what he’s known in his entire existence. And he rips his palm open on the stem of a rose without flinching or betraying any reaction. He can still do what needs to be done, cleverly. He is still a tactician and a resourceful soldier that won’t let himself be backed into a corner and won’t just put up with his situation.

Castiel is still a fierce and formidable fighter, and he will fight till he hasn’t got it in him anymore. Cas is a killer, and a terrifying person to have as your enemy. And right here in this moment you know that he hasn’t lost that with his grace.

Cut him and he may bleed, but he’s no more ordinary and defenseless than the warrior of heaven he is and always will be.
