Phil Sgriccia: Gingerbread, what does that mean?
Ben Edlund: All right, this goes way way back to some weird stuff. Like, this character initially was conceived of –I thought of, uh, Seth Green for it.
Phil Sgriccia: Oh that’s right, that’s right. I remember.
Ben Edlund: I even talked to Seth Green, and he was amenable if the schedule worked but it didn’t work. And the script got turned in very late, it was all problematic. But like ultimately his character was kind of initially conceived of with that, and gingerbread is just, like, red hair. And then it just kinda kept riding through.
Phil Sgriccia: But it kinda–it’s funny because the way Jensen does it, it’s very funny and you’re–
Ben Edlund: Yeah.
Phil Sgriccia: –you’re not sure what it means.
Ben Edlund: No, I actually like the little mystery. Like sometimes those weird, like, undone, like, sweater, you know, threads to me are like–That’s this, almost the equivalent of the uh, the extension cord on the refrigerator. It’s like, there’s a deeper dimension to the fact that it makes no sense.
Ben Edlund: [referring to Jensen] He did amazing in this.
Phil Sgriccia: He was so funny in this.
Ben Edlund: Yeah.
Phil Sgriccia: The whole, like, closeup where he pulls the wallet back, that was something he did that we caught with a camera.
Ben Edlund: Yeah.
Phil Sgriccia: It was so much fun to shoot that because he played it so right down the middle, you know, just more awkward about it.
Ben Edlund: Oh, yeah, yeah.
Phil Sgriccia: Like, “Wow, somebody likes me.”
Ben Edlund: Well, that’s the weird thing is that it reads in this weird way where it does feel like Dean’s a little bit like–It’s almost like a romantic comedy kind of fluster. Which is very interesting for the character Dean, because it just sort of suggests this weird [laughs] this potential.
Phil Sgriccia: [laughs] This potential for love in all places.
Ben Edlund: Oh, Aaron and Dean, they could come together. He’s had a rough life. He’s a hard character to, to, you know. To settle down with. Anyway. [clears throat](Source: Commentary track for “Everybody Hates Hitler”, Supernatural Season 8 DVD/Blu-ray.)
